Green Karst Trails & Coastal Echoes Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Bač

Upon arrival at your accommodation in Bač, you’ll be warmly welcomed and shown to your room. Take time to settle in, relax, and attune to the peaceful rhythm of the Karst region.
In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner featuring local flavors.

Riding: none

Day 2 – First Ride & Lipizzaner Heritage

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the stables, where your horse awaits. Spend the morning riding through gentle countryside, getting to know your horse while learning the fundamentals of western riding.

After lunch, visit the world-famous Lipica Stud Farm, the birthplace of the Lipizzaner horse. Explore the historic estate, watch mares and foals grazing in vast green pastures, and—if you wish—attend a performance showcasing these majestic horses (entrance fees payable locally).

Riding time: ~3 hours

Day 3 – Into the Heart of the Karst

Today you begin your ride through the dramatic Karst landscape, shaped by legends, limestone formations, and hidden underground worlds. The trail leads beneath a towering natural rock wall and through a tunnel carved into stone before reaching Ć ilentabor, offering impressive panoramic views.

Continue riding to Zagorje for lunch at a local pub, then follow the hillsides of PrimoĆŸ, passing remnants of World War II tunnels. The route continues across the floodplains of the Pivka River, before reaching Trnje, where the horses remain overnight. You return to Bač for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Riding time: ~7 hours

Day 4 – The Disappearing Lakes of Pivka

A full day in the saddle takes you toward two remarkable seasonal lakes — Petelinjsko Jezero and Palsko Jezero. These lakes belong to the unique Pivka River basin, home to 17 intermittent lakes that appear after heavy rainfall and vanish into the Karst underworld, leaving behind lush green meadows.

You’ll pass the ruins of Kalec Castle, pausing beneath centuries-old linden trees, then ride across open meadows to the village of Bač for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy peaceful woodland trails as you return to the stables in Ơembije.

Riding time: ~7 hours

Day 5 – Caves, Castles & River Crossing

Begin the day exploring Postojna Cave, the largest and most famous cave system in Europe. Afterwards, visit Predjama Castle, a spectacular medieval fortress built into the mouth of a cliffside cave.

After lunch along the way, return for an afternoon ride descending toward the Reka River, where you may experience the thrill of crossing the water on horseback. The trail climbs back through rolling hills, with the possibility of catching a magical sunset from a hilltop or among grazing horses.

Riding time: ~4 hours

Day 6 – Piran & the Adriatic Coast

Today is a non-riding day as you travel to Piran, one of the Adriatic’s most enchanting coastal towns. Wander through narrow medieval streets, admire Venetian architecture, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere from the hilltop church down to the lively seaside square.

Lunch is at leisure, with countless cafés and restaurants offering fresh seafood and Mediterranean cuisine.

Riding: none

Day 7 – Wild Milanja & Farewell Ride

After a short drive to Ć embije, saddle your horse for your final ride into the wild heart of Milanja, an area known for its brown bear population. With luck, you may spot signs of these impressive animals along the trail.

From high ridges, enjoy breathtaking views before stopping for lunch at a rustic woodland cottage near World War II tunnels. In the afternoon, ride back toward Ć embije, concluding your journey with a celebratory farewell dinner and final night in this extraordinary Karst region.

Riding time: ~7 hours
